Emily was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia in November of 2013, when she acknowledged seeing "small animals and children that weren't really there." This clinical diagnosis was confirmed by the results of PET scans and other diagnostic tests.
Since her diagnosis, one of the challenges for her family and friends has been the understanding that, for Emily, recognizing the art in nature, and the life in her art, was always an element of her personality. In other words, this ability to see things differently from others didn't occur suddenly. For Emily, her gift had simply turned into a challenge.
This connection between her vision, art, and the stories she creates to make sense of the world was the inspiration for digitizing some of her expansive art collection and sharing it with the world via Storybird. For whatever greater good in life that achieves. You can see her art portfolio and read her artist statement here.
Friends and family have often needed to share the news with others that "Emily does not sell her art." This project may help some in that regard. Digitized art does lose some of the qualities of the originals, but thanks to the work of David Anderson and some FedEx/Kinkos support we have rendered the work as best we could.
